Shandon Local Food Group in collaboration with The Flower Colonies Area Residents’ Association (FCARA) are pleased to welcome Prof. Richard Rodger (Author of Edinburgh’s Colonies) to talk to us and answer your questions on

A History of the Colonies

at Polwarth Church Hall on Tuesday May 14th 7 pm for 7:30 pm start.

Refreshments provided from 7 pm. Entrance by donation: £2:50 suggested to cover costs. All welcome: you don’t need to be a member of either group.

Please come along with your photos of life in the colonies to share.

At this meeting, we will also be updating on the conservation status of the colonies and plans for the old railway line.

We aim to finish the formal meeting at 8:30 pm but you are welcome to stay for informal discussion, we will exit the church hall at 9 pm.

All welcome to join us at this FREE meeting to find out more about Shandon Local Food Group with brief AGM.

At Polwarth Church Hall

Wednesday 20th March 8-9:30 pm

Tea/coffee provided from 7:45 pm

We’ll be showing a slide show with photos taken from a broad cross-section of our events.

We’ll split into some small discussion groups around the following themes:

1. Have you changed any habits in the last 4 years?- do you garden or shop differently, reduce food waste, compost more etc? What inspired you to change or what might help you change habits?

2. “Smart” Communications – in this age of computers and smart phones, how can our group improve communications and discussion forum between our members?

3. Getting the most from local food. How can we improve links to local producers, encourage the eating of local food and give a seasonal cooking tip?

4. Community events. What events would you like to see us organise in the next year?

New Committee

I would like to express my thanks to all of last year’s committee and to the members who have helped make our events so successful. I am pleased to announce that Ken, Beccy, Rhona, Eddie and Kate have expressed interest in continuing on the committee. Our constitution states that committee members who have served 3 consecutive years are not allowed to stand for re-election: this makes space for some new faces to bring fresh ideas. So we say goodbye to Sue and in addition, Judith, Harriet and Ally have decided to not stand again for a variety of reasons. We also would be keen to invite back one or two of the original committee members. Please join us- we are sure we can use your skills whether they be in IT, gardening, cooking, publishing, accounting or project management!

Drop-in Gardening at the RECG: 1st Sunday of Every Month

We are piloting some community gardening on the first Sunday of each month at 2pm in the Royal Edinburgh Community Garden on Myreside Road. So far, it has been a great success with a really friendly atmosphere: 22 people came along last Sunday, 3rd March (gallery of pictures below). We did some watering in the glasshouse and repotting. Outside, we were renewing the woodchip by the picnic table and digging over some beds. The kids enjoyed fetching chippings in their little wheelbarrows, they also made a rope swing in the orchard and built a den. All our efforts were rewarded by some banana loaf and chocolate brownies.

Martyn and Alex will be leading up the next Shandon Local Food Group community gardening on 7th April at 2pm at the Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens, Myreside Rd.

Heather from Whitmuir farm has invited members of Shandon Local Food Group to the following public meeting.

WHITMUIR – GROWING THE FUTURE
TUESDAY 12 February 2013, 7.30PM
The future of food and farming is now one of the key challenges we face and we want Whitmuir to be the place where you explore and begin to build a more sustainable food system.
As well as continuing to produce good food every day, we want Whitmuir to become a national resource on sustainable food and farming. We plan to develop a number of discovery trails, exhibits, educational opportunities and citizen science projects.
Whitmuir, with your support, will be a place where you can:
• Imagine the future of food and farming in our one planet

• Work out the farm’s carbon footprint on our zero carbon, zero
waste trail
• Learn about growing, foraging and cooking organic food in our
green classroom, field kitchen and community plots and garden
• Discover birds, bugs and beasties and what they do all day on
our nature trails
• Climb the hill on our history trail and see for years and years
• Learn to be a farmer by coming on our courses – everything
from rearing your own hens to growing herbs, from laying hedges
to keeping bees, from respecting pigs to making silage…
Whitmuir Community Farm Community Benefit Society has now been established to purchase the land, undertake the farming and develop this educational work. The new Society is issuing shares to raise the funds to do this work.

Community Garden Afternoon: First Sunday of the Month

Shandon Local Food Group welcome all ages to join us on the first Sunday of the month 2pm – 4:30pm at the Royal Edinburgh Community Garden. We’ll be doing a bit of light gardening, and stopping for some chat and a cuppa.

Our first session of 2013 was Sunday 3rd February and next sessions planned on 5th May, 2nd June, and 7th July.

There is no need to have any experience of gardening and Food Group members of all ages are welcome (though children should be supervised by a parent/carer).

Please let Sue know you are planning to come (mckendrick2007@talktalk.net so we can manage numbers). For insurance purposes, please make sure you are a Shandon Local Food Group member – simply email shandonfood@hotmail.co.uk.

Directions: From Shandon go along Myreside Road, past the Watsons Pavillion, stadium and foot bridge; after 100 metres you will see the garden entrance through a large black gate on the left hand side. There is a portacabin with toilet, tools and small kitchen where we meet. Some refreshments provided.
